ST JOHN and CROFT provided full AE design services for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the three-story 34,205 SF VOLAR barracks building for an infantry unit within the 101st Airborne Division. In support of a design-build contractor, CROFT-ST JOHN served as the AE Designer of Record on a highly accelerated timeline to completely reconfigure interior floor plans and replace all interior walls, flooring, ceilings, lighting, fixtures, plumbing, piping, fire protection, electrical infrastructure, HVAC systems, communications, water supply, roofing, and glass curtain-wall systems to enhance anti-terrorism resiliency. In addition to furnishing private rooms and restrooms for 72 soldiers, the three-story, steel-frame structure included staff duty space, community room, laundry facilities, and modern amenities.  The rehabilitation included asbestos abatement of basement area crawlspaces, pavements, and adding new electrical transformers and switch gear to support surrounding buildings. State-of-the-industry LIDAR equipment was used to develop a 3D BIM as-built model of the facility to reduce the potential for human error and meet the highly accelerated AE delivery timeline.
